My Culinary Adventure in Goa

Goa, known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, is located in South-Western India. Few years ago, two of my friends and I, undertook the journey of visiting this stunningly beautiful place (and yes we did dish out a bit of cash for gold later to find out it was totally fake!). We began our culinary journey with the lip smacking and delectable sea-food, on which Goan cuisine is highly dependable. We were astounded at seeing the innumerable ways in which seafood was being cooked to produce tempting dishes.

In our search for authentic Goan food, the three of us landed up in the most popular sea-side resort, Cavala Beach Resort, which served us ethnic Goan cuisine and also offered some good Indian and Continental delicacies. In order to pamper our taste buds, we also headed for the famous restaurant, Raj’s Pentagon, situated in South Goa, where we were served a luscious range of dishes ranging from traditional Goan fish in coconut sauce and grilled lobster and mussels to Mutton Sukka and Vindaloo made with tiger prawns.

Some of the dishes that I would highly recommend and that are not to be missed in Goa include Prawn Balchao, Prawn Temperado, Oyster Pie, Ambot Tik (an exotic sweet and sour dish made of fish or meat), and Sorpotel. These dishes have become popular all over the world. Since we made the holiday trip during the New Year break, we were fortunate to experience the seasonal delicacy, Xinanio, which is oyster breaded and mildly fried. It is not available in late January. During this time, we also had the pleasure of savoring the mouth-watering Bangada and the highly regarded Isvonn or king fish.

Goa is unquestionably a seafood lover’s paradise. Although three of us were non-vegetarians, we didn’t miss the opportunity of trying some of the exquisite and famous Souraca, Mushroom Tondak, Feijoada, Khatkhatem and Foogath. Eating out at Fernando’s Nostalgia (situated in Raia, South Goa) was again a unique and wonderful experience. After being done with Goan food, we were looking out for some exotic Goan cocktails, like the Catamaran, which are available in most of the restaurants we visited.
